Competition proposal as a strategy for narrow plots in New York
CASA HARLEM is a project that challenges the principle of how the city-owned
and underutilized vacant lots can be developed into affordable housing.
Inspired by Harlem’s Dutch heritage Casa Harlem looked into European cities
urban fabrics and analysed how these lots were developed into residential
units.
This approach was then further developed into an analytical methodology
to evaluate the vacant lots across New York, and how to establish the most
efficient design solution for the given lot. The architectural solution aims for a
high number of residential units to meet the city’s HNY 2.0 vision and revolves
around efficiency, replicability and modularity.
The project developed a variety of modular elements, from interior to exterior,
which can be rearranged and replicated across tiny empty lots throughout the
city.
