The Patriarcado Palace, framed by the historical density and the steep topographical transitions of Lisbon, nowadays regulates functional obsolescence at low level and architectural fragmentation at high level.
Vacant for over two decades, the trio of contiguous buildings underwent twentieth-century structural alterations, leaving a disjointed interior layout within the historical facades.
The scale transition between the domestic streets and the facade facing Campo dos Mártires da Pátria is managed through a unified rehabilitation that converts the vacant heritage into a boutique hotel.
The mixed-use program of the complex is connected by a public anchor and a conservation strategy. The design preserves distinct chronological phases: the interior of Building 1 is opened to reinstate a relationship with the public square, while the Baroque core of Building 2 is preserved in situ. The gated forecourt is permanently opened, integrating pedestrian circulation from the city into the building’s new central space.
The project integrates into the cultural and hospitality sector, acting as a renewal strategy for the local urban area.
Beneath the historic envelopes, the underground terrain is excavated to accommodate two levels of technical infrastructure and private parking, removing vehicular presence from the primary facades via a southern access. Above, the roof morphology is modified with custom dormer windows, adding guest accommodation into the Lisbon roofscape while maintaining the skyline rhythm.
