Formal and volumetric simplification
Settled between two green spaces in the eastern part of Porto, the plot embraces a regeneration and urban expansion process in one of the most prominent areas of the city. In an urban area where the typological diversity and the contrast in scale between the buildings are evident, the design aligns volumes with different elevations, high in the north and low in the south, creating a dialogue with public and private courtyards as central green spaces for connection and enjoyment. The dominant base connects the green areas. The outdoor spaces are the programmatic and functional extension that can include a community garden and park, playground, urban gardens, sports, lounge.
Reflecting the area’s evolving history, the facade incorporates diverse materials, revealing layers of composition; a neutral outer mesh and chromatic ceramic-coated blocks create a dynamic and adaptable facade. Its multifunctionality and dynamism result from an adaptable, alternating module capable of integrating and assimilating various infrastructural output functions. The interior offers a comfortable, contemporary, and panoramic experience, contributing to the evolving charm of this prominent part of Porto. Overall, the project aims to constitute a hinge that establishes an integrated communication of the different surrounding architectural realities, asserting itself as a beacon of a new logic of urban planning and landscape integration.
